Building Your Dream Cabin

Written By: Lissa Poirot

After years of borrowing a friend’s cabin or renting from Airbnb, you may be ready to build your own dream home you can enjoy whenever a free weekend arises. A cabin in the North Georgia mountains is a dream escape to enjoy with your family and friends on crisp fall days, snowy winter breaks and lush green forest-covered days of spring and summer. It’s also an investment. Real estate has long been touted one of the best investment vehicles. While you can rent it out for an additional income stream, you can also just hold onto a place to watch it appreciate in value over the years and leave a lasting legacy for your loved ones.

Wondering how to make your dream a reality? Kelly Schroter and Kristin Young, who both work with BHGRE Metrobrokers North GA and Log Cabins of Yellowstone, walk you through the process of building your own cabin in the mountains.

1. DETERMINE YOUR FINANCING

“How will you pay for your dream?” Decide if you will pay cash or choose to finance. Some builders offer builder financing, or will let you pay as you go. Some will require a construction loan. There are different programs for primary homes, second homes or investment properties.

2. DECIDE WHERE YOU WANT TO BUILD

“What town/location is appealing to you?” There are numerous charming towns in the North Georgia mountains. Rent a cabin and explore the area where you think you want to build. Research the location and amenities before you begin searching for your lot.

3. PICTURE THE SETTING FOR YOUR CABIN

“Are you seeking mountain or water views, or wooded privacy?” There are many options to choose from: Long-range mountain views, beautiful lake property, bustling river cabins, or a wooded private lot. Lots are available in gated communities, subdivisions with amenities and/or covenants and restrictions, or choose unrestricted land where you can build anything you want.

4. GET INSPIRED

Attend the 2022 Blue Ridge Parade of Homes. Walk through some of the most beautiful newbuilds by the top builders in the area. New homes will be showcased allowing you to see the latest trends in new home construction, products, interior design and give you the opportunity to meet and interact with the top builders in the area. The event takes place September 30 through October 2. For more info check out blueridgeparadeofhomes.com.

5. MEET WITH YOUR BUILDER

“What style, size and floorplan do you envision?” There are numerous floorplans available and your builder can help you pick the best one for your dream and that works with your lot. Browse floor plans at logcabinsofyellowstone.com or explore any of the other quality builders in the area.
