IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD for families with special needs children, it takes a village that understands the unique challenges and necessary qualifications. Enter Special Needs Respite, a Roswell-based nonprofit that pays for childcare to give parents of these special children a much-needed break. Though the organization does not employ caregivers or render actual care, they do have a network of approved respite care providers, but their primary purpose is to provide scholarships to families to cover the costs of care.
“Our mission is to ‘stand in the gap’ for families that have applied for government assistance, but have been put on a wait list,” says founder Stacy Georges. Special Needs Respite sees a greater need during the winter months, when kids are out of school on break and the extra stress of the holiday season starts to weigh on parents.
