Nature Meets Thrill: Take a Ride this Season on the Georgia Mountain Coaster

Written By: Brittany Dean

Helen has added yet another reason to visit the northeastern Bavarian-style town. Often known for Octoberfest, held mid-September through early November, Helen made history in 2019 by opening Georgia’s very first alpine coaster. Now, Helen is attracting not only the German beer and pretzel enthusiast but also the adventure-seeking naturalist. Unlike a traditional roller coaster, an alpine coaster is set in nature, allowing for fresh air and scenic views all while experiencing a thrilling rush.

Built in 2019, Helen’s 1-mile steel rail system offers year-round fun. Designed by Wiegand Sports, the Georgia Mountain Coaster is meant to mimic a ride-along Gelmerbahn, Switzerland’s unique Alpine Rollercoaster. Sights include Helen’s hillside, the lush Chattahoochee National Forest, and any wildlife brave enough to show face near the soaring coaster.

Thrill seeker or not, this coaster offers adjustable speeds that are controlled by the rider. Whether you want the maximum adrenaline rush soaring at the top speed of 28 mph or would rather enjoy a slower scenic ride through the Helen hillsides with the breaks on, the Georgia Mountain Coaster fits the needs of any rider. This family-friendly adventure allows for a single or double rider. Children will be at ease with the option of riding alongside an adult as each toboggan (sled) offers two seats.

The Georgia Mountain Coaster is open 7 days a week (weather permitting) and even offers night rides for the most adventurous of them all.  Whether visiting for a day or long weekend, Helen never disappoints, especially this time of year. With the addition of this spectacular alpine coaster, Helen has become even more thrilling!
