Rich History & Revitalization

Written By: Lindsey Pierce

Located an hour east of Atlanta, the city of Monroe has been recognized many times by the Georgia Downtown Association for its revitalization achievements. Not too many years ago, however, the downtown area was struggling to survive with only 60 percent occupancy, meager funding, and lack of momentum after the economic downturn in the late 2000s. Today, beautiful downtown Monroe is bustling and filled with shops, restaurants and cultural activities to suit just about anyone’s fancy. Known as the “City of Governors” since seven Georgia governors called Monroe home, the city has a rich southern history which can be explored at the Visitors Center and Museum, or by strolling along Broad Street on the Historic Walking Tour.
